Ahead of India’s next T20 World Cup match against the USA, Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar were seen together in New York. This rare meeting of two cricket legends was captured in a photo that quickly gained attention online, shared by Indian sports journalist and host Vikram Sathaye.
Tendulkar, who is in the USA for the T20 World Cup, attended the recent India vs Pakistan match, where India won by six runs. The last time Kohli and Tendulkar were seen together was during the 2023 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, where Kohli scored his 50th ODI century, breaking Tendulkar’s record. Kohli’s gesture of bowing to Tendulkar after the milestone was a memorable moment, and their recent meeting is their first public appearance together since.
It’s not clear if their conversation involved cricket, given Kohli’s form as an opener has been under scrutiny. Despite low scores against Ireland and Pakistan, Kohli had a standout IPL season, winning the Orange Cap. If cricket advice was sought, Tendulkar, with his vast experience as an opener, would be an ideal mentor.
The sight of Tendulkar and Kohli together is a treat for fans. Tendulkar, regarded as one of the greatest Indian batters, had a remarkable career as an ODI opener, scoring over 15,000 runs with 45 centuries. Kohli, mostly successful at No. 3, has also had a stellar career.
Kohli’s Role as Opener:
Kohli’s transition to an opener in the T20 World Cup has been challenging. In the match against Ireland, he was dismissed for just one run, and against Pakistan, he started with a strong cover drive but was out on the next ball, marking his first single-digit score against Pakistan in T20 World Cups.
Despite these setbacks, India is expected to continue with Kohli as the opener, sidelining Yashasvi Jaiswal for the upcoming match against the USA. A win would secure India’s place in the Super Eights, where they will face tough competition from teams like Australia and South Africa.
