The much-awaited clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025 has seen two of Mumbai’s key players absent — captain Hardik Pandya and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. While Pandya’s absence is due to a one-match ban for a slow over-rate offence, many fans are also wondering why Jasprit Bumrah is missing from MI’s playing XI in today’s encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s ace fast bowler and MI’s bowling lynchpin, has been out of action since December 2024. He sustained an injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. This unfortunate injury sidelined Bumrah not just from the remainder of the Test series but also from India’s victorious Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, leaving a significant void in both national and franchise cricket.
Since his injury, Bumrah has been undergoing an intense rehabilitation program at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The BCCI medical team has been closely monitoring his progress, ensuring that the fast bowler regains full match fitness before returning to competitive cricket.
Speaking ahead of the IPL 2025 season, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardena provided an update on Bumrah’s recovery:
“Jasprit has just started his progress. We have to wait and see what the BCCI medical team’s feedback is. At the moment, everything is going well, but his return is being assessed on a day-to-day basis. Not having him is a challenge. He is one of the best bowlers in the world and has been a fantastic pro for us over the years.”
Given his rehabilitation schedule and the need for careful workload management, MI has decided not to risk Bumrah too early in the tournament, ensuring he returns only when fully fit.
While there is no official timeline on Bumrah’s exact return date, sources close to the team suggest that MI is optimistic about his availability in the upcoming group-stage matches, depending on his fitness clearance from the BCCI medical panel.
Fans can expect the Mumbai Indians to provide periodic updates on his fitness status. MI management, along with the Indian cricket board, is prioritizing Bumrah’s long-term fitness, especially considering the upcoming international calendar.
Jasprit Bumrah has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians setup since his debut. He has taken 165 wickets in 133 IPL matches, known for his lethal yorkers and death-over mastery. His absence is undoubtedly a significant blow to MI’s bowling attack.
