Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will be without the services of their express pacer Mayank Yadav in today’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam. The absence of the 22-year-old speedster is a significant blow for LSG, as he is set to miss a majority of the season due to dual injury setbacks.
Mayank Yadav, who was recovering from a back injury sustained last season, has unfortunately encountered another obstacle in his rehabilitation. Ahead of the DC vs LSG fixture, LSG head coach Justin Langer provided an update on Mayank’s fitness status, revealing that the pacer suffered a toe injury during his recovery phase.
“Mayank, who everyone was very excited about last year, he was going quite well (coming back from a back injury), and he kicked his toe on the bed. He got an infection in his toe. It’s put his rehab back about a week or two weeks. But he’s up and running. We regularly see videos of him bowling. I saw a video of his yesterday. So, hopefully by the back end of the tournament, Mayank will be up and ready to go for us.”
This new injury has delayed his return by at least a couple of weeks, leaving LSG without their pace ace for the initial phase of the season.
The Lucknow-based franchise has been grappling with multiple injury concerns this season. Apart from Mayank Yadav, left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan has also been ruled out of IPL 2025 after suffering a calf injury during his rehab period. The team management has roped in all-rounder Shardul Thakur as Mohsin’s replacement.
Additionally, there are fitness concerns surrounding two more LSG pacers:
Mayank Yadav made headlines during IPL 2024 with his blistering pace and impactful performances. He debuted for Lucknow Super Giants against Punjab Kings in Lucknow, delivering a match-winning spell of 3-27, claiming the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh, and Jitesh Sharma.
In LSG’s following match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Mayank produced another fiery spell, registering figures of 3-14 and dismantling RCB’s middle order by dismissing Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, and Rajat Patidar. He regularly clocked speeds in excess of 150 kph, earning consecutive Player of the Match awards.
Unfortunately, his maiden IPL season was cut short after suffering a side strain, limiting his appearances to just four games. He later made his India debut in October 2024 against Bangladesh, picking up four wickets across three T20Is.
While the LSG management remains optimistic about Mayank’s return later in the tournament, his participation remains uncertain. If his rehabilitation progresses well, the pacer could be available in the second half of IPL 2025, potentially bolstering LSG’s playoff push.
Today’s clash between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants sees both teams eyeing crucial points early in the season. Delhi Capitals, led by Rishabh Pant, won the toss and elected to bowl first. With KL Rahul unavailable due to personal reasons and LSG missing key pacers, it will be interesting to see how the team adapts to the challenges.
