New Zealand fans were left disappointed as Rachin Ravindra, one of their most promising all-rounders, was not included in the playing XI for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Pakistan at the National Stadium, Karachi. His absence has raised several questions among cricket enthusiasts about whether it’s due to an injury, tactical decision, or last-minute team changes.
Rachin Ravindra sustained a head injury during a warm-up match against Pakistan on February 8, 2025, in Lahore. While fielding, he misjudged a catch under floodlights off Khushdil Shah’s shot, resulting in a severe blow to his forehead, which led to a deep cut and required stitches.
Initially, New Zealand’s medical team hoped for a quick recovery, and Ravindra was seen participating in light training sessions leading up to the match. However, following strict concussion protocols, the team management decided not to risk him for today’s crucial opener against Pakistan.
With Ravindra unavailable, New Zealand has reshuffled their playing XI. Devon Conway and Will Young are set to open the innings, while Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner will share the spin-bowling responsibilities in Ravindra’s absence.
Ravindra, known for his versatility with both bat and ball, was expected to play a crucial role in New Zealand’s campaign. His ability to play spin well and contribute with left-arm spin bowling would have been a major asset, especially against Pakistan’s bowling attack featuring Abrar Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi.
As per New Zealand’s head coach Gary Stead, Rachin Ravindra’s headaches have started to subside, but the medical team is ensuring he is fully fit before allowing him to return to competitive cricket. With New Zealand having a packed schedule in the tournament, they don’t want to take any chances with a head injury.
While there is no official confirmation, sources suggest that Ravindra might be available for New Zealand’s second group-stage match, depending on how his recovery progresses over the next few days.
Rachin Ravindra’s absence could be a big blow to New Zealand, especially in conditions that favor spin and all-rounders. However, with experienced campaigners like Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, and Tom Latham, the team will look to compensate for the loss and maintain their strong record against Pakistan.
