Will Hasaranga be available for the World Cup 2023? SLC gives an update

Wanindu Hasaranga, the star spinner for Sri Lanka, is currently facing uncertainty regarding his participation in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. Hasaranga sustained a hamstring injury during the 2023 Lankan Premier League playoffs in August, which also prevented him from taking part in Sri Lanka’s recent Asia Cup campaign where they finished as runners-up.

Arjuna de Silva, the head of Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) medical panel, provided an update on Hasaranga’s injury situation. According to Arjuna de Silva, the team management is consulting with international doctors to determine whether the cricketer requires surgery.

“We are consulting foreign doctors to see whether he needs surgery or not. If he does, he will be out for at least three months. At the moment, the situation is not that great, and it’s highly unlikely that he can play in the World Cup,” Arjuna de Silva stated in an interview with The Sunday Times newspaper in Sri Lanka.

Hasaranga, a 26-year-old all-rounder, is a crucial part of Sri Lanka’s cricketing lineup, known for his spin bowling prowess and ability to contribute with the bat. He has been a key weapon in Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, and his absence would be a significant blow to the team.

The Sri Lankan team management is exploring various options to ensure Hasaranga’s availability for crucial matches during the World Cup. This decision will depend on the recommendations of the consultant who is reviewing his medical reports.

Hasaranga’s absence from the entire ODI World Cup would be a setback for Sri Lanka, especially considering his impressive performances in recent ICC tournaments. He topped the wicket rankings in both of the most recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cups and was a standout performer in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 held in Zimbabwe.

Sri Lanka is scheduled to kickstart their ODI World Cup campaign against South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on October 7. As of now, Sri Lanka is one of the two teams that have not yet announced their squad for the marquee event, and Hasaranga’s injury situation adds further uncertainty to their preparations.
