Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are gearing up for their clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). CSK, currently ranked third in the IPL 2024 points table, will look to capitalize on their home advantage and return to winning ways against KKR.
CSK still have a concern or two regarding their 2 star bowlers Pathirana and Mustafizur. Both of them missed their last game and the situation is still unclear regarding their availability for today’s clash.
Mustafizur Rahman, who missed CSK’s last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) due to Visa work in Bangladesh, is expected to rejoin the team in time for the match against KKR. However, CSK’s bowling consultant, Eric Simons, mentioned that they are still awaiting confirmation on Mustafizur’s return.
CSK bowling coach talks about Mustafizur Rahman
Regarding Mustafizur’s availability, Simons stated, “His getting back here is not really in our hands as he’s flown back to Bangladesh for his passport. So, let’s see what happens. But as a team, we have to prepare for these eventualities.”
Meanwhile, there’s optimism surrounding Matheesha Pathirana’s return to the playing XI. Pathirana, who missed the game against SRH due to a minor niggle, is progressing well according to Simons. However, his availability for the upcoming matches will depend on the assessment of the physiotherapist.
Has Pathirana recovered from his niggle?
Simons mentioned, “Regarding Pathirana, yes, it’s a long tournament. We wanted to be conservative with the decision surrounding him. So, whether he’ll play in the next match is up to the physios to decide. Our only concern is that it’s a long tournament. We just want to make sure that we don’t risk four games to make sure he plays one. So, our decisions are based on that. But he’s coming along very nicely.”
Pathirana, known for his bowling style similar to Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga, faces a risk of injury due to the lower angle of release, which puts strain on his lower back. Despite this concern, Pathirana was seen practicing at the nets, hinting at a possible return for the game against KKR.
