Varun Chakravarthy Declines Test Cricket Call Amid Sidhu’s Push for Selection

After calls from former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu for Varun Chakravarthy’s inclusion in the Test squad, Chakravarthy distances himself from the discussion.

Varun Chakravarthy has made huge strides in Indian cricket in a short period. The right-arm mystery spinner made his ODI debut in the recent series against England and proved to be an integral part of India’s performance in the ICC Champions Trophy. He took 9 wickets, including a 5-wicket haul. Chakravarthy’s T20I performances have been inspiring too. He has claimed 33 wickets in 18 matches with an average of 14.57.

Sidhu calls for Varun in Test squad

Former Indian cricketer recently urged the Indian coach and BCCI authorities to include Varun Chakravarthy in the Test squad for the series in England. Sidhu had said to Sports Today that the mystery element in Chakravarthy’s bowling would torment the England team. English batters suffer against mystery spinners and they are England’s swollen nerve, said Sidhu.

Varun judges his bowling style to be unfit for Tests

However, Chakravarthy, the ICC Champions Trophy winner, has come out with a statement that his bowling style doesn’t suit Test cricket. The 33-year-old has said that even though he has an interest in Test cricket, his bowling style is not fit for it. The spinning sensation has made his mark on Indian cricket in a short career already. However, Chakravarthy seems to be made for white-ball cricket.

Inexperience in red-ball

It is important to mention that Chakravarthy has almost no experience in red-ball cricket. The spinner has played only one first-class match back in 2018. He could take only one wicket in the match after conceding 105 runs at an economy of 2.69. Chakravarthy has not played any first-class matches since.

Varun’s bowling style is suited to limited-overs cricket where he uses his variations to trap batsmen. He has predominantly been a T20 player, having made his ODI debut in the recent series against England. In List A cricket too, he has played just 27 matches. It’s obvious, then, why Chakravarthy thinks he is not suited for Test cricket.

Injury concerns for Chakravarthy

Chakravarthy has also suffered with injuries in his short career. In the series against England in February, he was ruled out of the third ODI due to a calf injury. In the final of the ICC Champions Trophy too, he was hit by the ball on his right foot in an attempt to stop the ball on his own bowling, raising concerns again.
