Rohit Sharma’s position as the Indian captain is almost confirmed for the major upcoming Test series against England in June. After leading a successful campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma has solidified his place in the team for Tests as well. India’s tour of England, with 5 Tests, will start on June 20.
The loss to New Zealand at home last year, the first Test series India lost at home in over a decade, brought questions on Sharma’s future in the team. Subsequently, India lost the Test series in Australia even after winning the first Test thanks to the brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah. Rohit’s form in the longest format has not been inspiring as he could score only 31 runs in the series. The 37-year-old’s highest score was 10 in the series. Tensions in the dressing room
With age not on his side and rumours of tensions in the dressing room, Rohit’s place in the team seemed uncertain. The Mumbai batsman dropped himself for the last Test in Sydney, adding fuel to the speculations. With players like Jasprit Bumrah at their peak, there have been calls for a change in leadership in red-ball cricket.
However, with the recent win in the ICC Champions Trophy, Rohit’s future in Tests seems secure for now. A report in The Indian Express says that the national selectors and the BCCI authorities have faith in Rohit leading the team for the series in England. Sharma has expressed his willingness to continue in his role too. Even after winning the ICC Champions Trophy, he denied any retirement plans.
Talking about his future plans, Sharma, in an interview with the ICC, has said that the 2027 ODI World is still too far but he is enjoying his time in the team and would like to keep all options open.
“There is no guarantee that runs won’t come five or two months down the line. I have seen a lot of cricket. Life changes every second, every minute, every day. I have confidence in myself that things can change, but at the same time I have to be realistic as well,” he told Star Sports in January.
