Ruturaj Gaikwad, the young Indian opener, believes his stint as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2024 has significantly impacted his approach to the game. In a video released by the BCCI, Gaikwad spoke about how leading the iconic franchise has fostered a sense of responsibility and a deeper understanding of the game’s flow.
CSK Captaincy Improved Game
“There hasn’t been a drastic change in my batting style,” Gaikwad clarified. “The focus remains on playing responsibly and finishing matches for the team. However, the captaincy experience has definitely altered my perspective. Now, I’m actively involved throughout the entire game, not just when I’m at the crease.”
He elaborated on how leading CSK has made him a more invested player, constantly analysing the game’s progress. “Captaining for an extended period in the IPL has made me stay mentally engaged for longer durations. It’s a shift from just focusing on the next ball to actively strategizing and understanding the bigger picture,” Gaikwad explained.
A Mixed Bag in Zimbabwe, But a Promising Future
Gaikwad’s comments come amidst India’s ongoing five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. While his performance in the first T20I was underwhelming, dismissed for just 7 runs by Blessing Muzarabani, he bounced back impressively in the second game. His unbeaten knock of 77 runs off 47 deliveries, studded with 11 fours and a six, showcased his aggressive batting style. He continued his good form in the third T20I, scoring a quickfire 49 off 28 balls, contributing significantly to India’s 23-run victory.
Gaikwad’s experience leading CSK appears to be translating into a more mature approach to his batting, evident in his recent performances for India. He is likely aiming to build upon this newfound awareness and solidify his place in the Indian T20I team. His ability to finish matches and adapt to various situations will be crucial as he seeks to cement his position as a vital cog in India’s T20I batting line-up.
