Rs 2 crore is the highest reserve price and two Indian players – Harbhajan Singh and Kedar Jadhav — and eight overseas players — Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Shakib Al Hasan, Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Liam Plunkett, Jason Roy & Mark Wood have been kept in the highest bracket. Apart from this, there are 12 players in the auction list with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore (no Indians). Hanuma Vihari and Umesh Yadav have been slotted in the Rs.1 crore category along with 9 other players.
Let’s have a look at the players retained, released, and traded by the IPL franchises before the IPL 2021 auction starts
Mumbai Indians
Purse Rs 15.35 crore; 7 slots, 4 overseas
Retained players:
Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Chris Lynn, Anmolpreet Singh, Saurabh Tiwary, Aditya Tare, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Anukul Roy, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Mohsin Khan
Released players:
Lasith Malinga, Nathan Coulter Nile, James Pattinson, Sherfane Rutherford, Mitchell McCleneghan, Digvijay Deshmukh, Prince Balwant Rai
The defending champions have the most balanced and complete squad in the league. While they do not need many buys, they cannot afford much as well. Since they have all the based covered, they might look to pick an overseas pacer in place of Lasith Malinga. However, they have 4 overseas slots to fill.
Players Mumbai Indians could target in IPL Auction 2021:
Batsmen (Karun Nair, Hanuma Vihari, Tom Banton)
All-rounders (Glenn Maxwell, Moeen Ali)

Chennai Super Kings
Purse; Rs 19.9 crore; 6 slots, 1 overseas

Players traded in:
Robin Uthappa from Rajasthan Royals
Chennai Super Kings had a forgettable IPL, in fact the worst one in their history of the league. However, they had only released 6 players in the lead up to the mini-auction. Chennai Super Kings need a back-up opener in place of Murali Vijay. They also need a frontline pacer mainly due to Dwayne Bravo’s fitness issue. The CSK will also try to get some young guns in the auction considering the average age of the squad.
Players CSK could target in IPL Auction 2021:
Batsmen (Mohammed Azharuddeen, Karun Nair, Steve Smith)
All-rounder (Moises Henriques, Shivam Dube)
Bowlers (Umesh Yadav, Krishnappa Gowtham).

Royal Challengers Bangalore had a decent run in IPL 2020 after a long time. Still, it chose to release 10 players in the lead up to the auction. Clearly Royal Challengers Bangalore have quite a lot to fill. They could go for an opener, all-rounders, and a back-up wicketkeeper. They need to find replacements for Umesh Yadav and Dale Steyn as well.

Opener (Alex Hales, Jason Roy, Mohammed Azharuddeen),
Middle-order batsman (Karun Nair)
All-rounder (Glenn Maxwell, Shakib Al Hasan, Kyle Jamieson)

Released Players:

With not much money left in the purse, the Hyderabad side might like to fix instability in the middle-order. They have some high-profile ones but would love to rope in a senior Indian batsman. Sunrisers Hyderabad would be hoping to get a fully fit Vijay Shankar for the whole season. They also like to focus for overseas pacer. Mustafizur Rahman could be a great option.
Players RR could target in IPL Auction 2021
Middle-order batsman (Karun Nair, Kedar Jadhav, Hanuma Vihari),

Released Players:
Chris Green, Harry Gurney, M Siddharth, Nikhil Naik, Siddhesh Lad, Tom Banton
Kolkata Knight Riders released only six players and look almost settled. They could think of adding a soild opener alongside Shubman Gill considering the issues they had faced last year. They could bid for a reliable finisher as well as an overseas spinner despite having a fine spin department.
Players KKR could target in IPL Auction 2021:
Batsmen (Mohammad Azharuddeen, Vishnu Solanki, Karun Nair, Abhimanyu Easwaran),
Bowlers (M Siddharth, Prithviraj Yarra, Jagadeesha Suchhith),

Released Players:
Alex Carey, Keemo Paul, Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Lamichhane, Mohit Sharma, Jason Roy.
Players traded:
Daniel Sams, Harshal Patel to Royal Challengers Bangalore
With Prithvi Shaw being inconsistent, Delhi Capitals could look for an overseas opener to support Shikhar Dhawan at the top order in place of Jason Roy. They might also be looking for a back-up for Rishabh Pant. The Capitals also need someone senior in the Indian pace department.
Players Delhi Capitals could target in IPL Auction 2021:
Batsmen (Alex Hales, Jason Roy),
Bowlers (Umesh Yadav, Prithviraj Yarra),
wicketkeeper (Sheldon Jackson, Sam BIllings).

Punjab Kings had to let go of some close matches in the last edition due to instable middle-order. With the biggest purse left, KL Rahul-led side must target a middle-order batsman and also, an all-rounder. Glenn Maxwell had given the side a tough time and now they need someone in place of the Australian. Punjab Kings will also need a specialist bowler for the death overs.

Rajasthan Royals need a senior batsman in their batting line-up heavily dependent on Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes. Even a cover for Jofra Archer is much needed in the bowling department as Archer tens to be injury-prone. The Royals should also look for some spinner as well. Their need of good finisher can be fulfilled well with whatever options they have in hand albeit now.

Batsmen (Alex Hales, Shahrukh Khan),
All-rounders ( Shakib Al Hasan, Shivam Dube, Chris Morris)
