Amid growing speculations over his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL), MS Dhoni has returned to India after vacationing in the United States, where he was spotted at an NFL game in Michigan. His arrival coincides with reports suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to reveal the retention rules for the upcoming IPL season.
The BCCI is considering allowing each of the 10 IPL franchises to retain up to five players ahead of the 2025 mega auction. This decision is aimed at providing franchises more flexibility, especially as some teams expressed concerns over losing star players.

Notably, teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders are reportedly against a mega auction, as they prefer continuity in their squads.
Additionally, the BCCI has confirmed that the Right to Match (RTM) card, which allowed teams to repurchase players at auction, will not be included this season. The retention rules are expected to be finalized after further deliberation between the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council.
With MS Dhoni’s leadership role in CSK already handed over to Ruturaj Gaikwad, fans and cricket pundits alike are eager to learn if Dhoni will continue as a player or take on a different role for the upcoming IPL season.
