The year 2025 could mark the end of a golden era in Indian cricket, with Rohit Sharma reportedly set to call time on his illustrious international career. Following his T20I retirement after the World Cup victory in Barbados last year, the Indian captain is now expected to bid farewell to ODIs after the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in Dubai.
However, a fresh report suggests that Rohit may not stop there. The Indian opener is also speculated to retire from Test cricket later this year, bringing an end to a career that has redefined batting across all formats.
Reports indicate that the Champions Trophy final could be Rohit’s last ODI appearance, regardless of the outcome. Sources within the BCCI have confirmed that the 37-year-old is unlikely to be part of India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. It is believed that Rohit will discuss his future with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar following the conclusion of the tournament.
If India wins the Champions Trophy, Rohit could announce his ODI retirement immediately after the final, similar to his T20I exit post the 2024 T20 World Cup.
If India does not win the title, Rohit may delay his decision until December, when India plays an ODI series against South Africa at home.
The fact that Rohit skipped the pre-final press conference has further fueled speculation regarding his retirement. Instead, his deputy Shubman Gill attended and categorically dismissed discussions on the matter.
While Rohit’s ODI exit seems certain, reports also suggest that he could retire from Test cricket in October 2025 during India’s home series against the West Indies. Interestingly, this would mirror Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series, which was also against the Caribbean side in 2013.
Notably, Rohit Sharma made his Test debut in that very series, scoring a century at the Eden Gardens. Could his final international match also be against West Indies?
If Rohit continues playing Test cricket, he might be part of the England tour next summer.
However, for a farewell series at home, the BCCI and selectors must be convinced that Rohit wishes to extend his Test career until October.
While Tendulkar received a grand farewell, most Indian cricketers in recent years have retired quietly. Whether Rohit Sharma will get a similar send-off remains to be seen.
